The Origin and Design of the Artichoke Lamp
The Artichoke Lamp, also known as the PH Artichoke or the Artichoke Light, was created by renowned Danish designer Poul Henningsen in 1958. It was designed for the Langelinie Pavilion, a Copenhagen restaurant that was demolished in 1982. The lamp was created as a centerpiece for the restaurant’s modern interior and served to diffuse light and create a warm, welcoming ambiance.
The Artichoke Lamp is a 360-degree hanging lamp made of 72 metal leaves that are arranged in 12 rows of six leaves each. The leaves are positioned in a way that creates a unique and sculptural effect when the lamp is lit. The design is based on the principle of a logarithmic spiral, which creates the same effect as a natural fern or artichoke.
